5e Party Level for Mask of the Pirate Queen

Mask of the Pirate Queen is originally a Star Wars: Edge of the Empire adventure, but its themes of bounty hunting, inter-system travel, and faction politics make it highly adaptable for a Spelljammer 5e campaign.

Based on its structure and typical D&D 5e adventure balancing, here are the recommended party levels to play this adventure as a Spelljammer 5e scenario:

Optimal Range: Levels 5–7

This range allows characters to be established, capable spelljammers, but not powerful enough to trivialize the investigation, space travel, or social dynamics of an interplanetary bounty hunt.

Why: The adventure involves navigating treacherous space (Ord Mantell/Saleucami in 5e terms), interacting with dangerous crime syndicates, and participating in high-stakes combat (ship-to-ship fighting). A 5th-level party has access to higher-level spells (like Fly, Dimension Door, or Fireball), making them effective in space combat, but still vulnerable enough that encounters remain dangerous.

Higher Challenge: Levels 8–10

If you prefer a high-octane, "elite mercenary" feel where the party can dominate skirmishes and affect regional politics, starting at a higher level works well. At this level, the party can easily travel to other planes to solve problems or track their quarry.

Key Considerations for Conversion:

The "Queen": The adventure centers on tracking a criminal mastermind across the stars.

Encounters: Replace the original Star Wars creatures with spelljammer-appropriate monsters (e.g., Githyanki, Illithids, or Neogi).

Setting: Transform "Ord Mantell" into a chaotic, large trading post (like a smaller Rock of Bral) in a wildspace system.

Ship Battle: Ensure the "intense interstellar fleet battle" is designed using the 5e Spelljammer ship-to-ship combat rules.

Why this fits Spelljammer:

The plot involves exploring new systems, gathering intelligence on a pirate leader, and handling competing pirate factions, which mirrors the "sandbox" nature of a good Spelljammer campaign, rather than just being a dungeon crawl.
